What Is a Quartz Sight Glass?

A quartz sight glass is a transparent fused quartz element — plain disc, flanged window or tubular section — installed in tanks, pipelines, boilers and process vessels so operators can visually monitor level, flow, color and phase state. Quartz is chosen over soda-lime sight glass where the process runs hot or chemically aggressive: fused quartz handles continuous service around 1100 °C and resists nearly all acids.

Design Notes

Quartz is strong in compression but brittle: proper seat, gasket selection and even bolt torque matter as much as the disc itself. For pressure-bearing sight ports, share the operating pressure and temperature at RFQ so thickness can be engineered — do not reuse unverified discs from other services.

Discs are inspected for thickness, surface condition and edge quality; tubular sections for OD/wall and roundness (quality control).
