Quartz tubing is the most widely used form of fused quartz in both the laboratory and industry. It serves as furnace process tubes, protective sheaths for thermocouples and heating elements, sample introduction lines, and sight tubes — anywhere a material must combine transparency, purity and service temperatures up to about 1100°C.
Transparent, translucent and opaque tubes
Three visual grades cover most needs. Transparent fused quartz tubing is the default for process observation, UV applications and high-purity work. Translucent (satin) tubing diffuses light and is common in lamp and heating applications. Opaque quartz tubing, filled with microscopic bubbles, scatters and reflects heat, making it useful for thermal insulation and infrared heating assemblies.
Sizes, tolerances and supply forms
Laboratory and furnace tubing is available across a wide envelope — from small-bore tubes of a few millimetres outer diameter up to large furnace tubes of 150 mm and beyond, with wall thickness typically between 1 and 10 mm. Standard commercial tolerances run around ±1.5% on outer diameter and ±10% on wall thickness; tighter control is available on request. Tubes are supplied cut to fixed lengths or by the metre.
End finishing and secondary work

Selecting a tube for your process
Three questions drive the selection. Temperature: continuous service is generally limited to about 1100°C, and large-diameter tubes need adequate wall thickness to resist sagging at temperature. Atmosphere: quartz is gas-tight and vacuum-compatible, but devitrifies faster in the presence of alkalis — keep surfaces clean. Optics: if the process needs observation or UV transmission, choose transparent material; if it needs heat shielding, choose opaque.
